Creating pressure for process innovation with production systems models

This post is a slight rewrite of the abstract for a presentation that I’m preparing for a mini–conference next week. Most niche market steel producers, like for example all major Swedish steel companies, would likely be able to make substantial productivity improvements with processing technology that permit cost efficient low volume production in the presence of […]

Learning to love complexity 2: Qualitative modelling

A couple of days ago I published a post called “learning to love complexity”, where I introduced system dynamics (SD) modelling and simulation.  I described the benefits of using SD as a systems thinking tool. But that’s only half the truth. And considering its current hype, what is systems thinking anyway? Systems dynamics vs. systems […]

Book review: Let my people go surfing

Yvon Chouinard’s book Let my people go surfing: the education of a reluctant businessman is both an autobiography, a company history and a book about business philosophy. It is an inspiring read for anyone with an entrepreneurial spirit that dreamed about or actually did start their own business. This book shows that there can be […]

On sandcones and rocky rivers

In a previous post I touched upon the sandcone model, which may provide a powerful metaphor and model that link the process of strategy to content. I’ll now try to relate the sandcone model to idea that inventory is like a river where dangers lurk under the surface: “As the level gets lower, boulders appear.” […]

Saab deal official — how about platforms?

GM and Spyker have finally announced that the Saab deal is real after all. This is great news! As this article shows, most experts seem to agree that Saab now must find a partner to increase production volumes and share the costs of platform development. I’m not so certain.

Grains of sand

I’m intrigued by the so-called “sand cone model” which was proposed by Ferdows and de Meyer (1990). The idea was that companies should develop their capabilities in a certain order in order to become competitive. Ferdows and de Meyer suggested that all companies must start with quality. The picture illustrates that when you develop your […]
