Fascinating photo from solar eclipse of January 4 2011

From where I live, those who were lucky enough to have a cloud free sky could see a partial solar eclipse at sunrise last Tuesday. Although I couldn’t see it from my house in Falun, I heard from colleagues that it could be seen from the neighbouring town of Borlänge. However, I’ve now learned that […]

Fun with stereographic projections

Up until now I neither took the time nor felt the need to really dig deep and understand stereographic projections. However, I’m now entering a research project where I must be reasonably comfortable with interpreting stereographic projections of crystallographic planes and directions. Take a look at this beautiful stereographic projection of a 360x180 degree panoramic […]

Is this volcanic ash?

I made an experiment and placed a white plate outdoors on my veranda this afternoon. During this time there was a light rain shower. When I checked the plate about an hour later, I found a number of small particles, seen in the picture below. I’m uncertain of how much debris that would normally come with […]

Beautiful pictures from Eyjafjallajökull volcano

The volcanic eruption on Iceland is causing serious trouble, both for individuals and for society at large. Still, there is something deeply fascinating about the enormous powers that are let loose when a volcano erupts. The current eruption at Eyjafjallajökull started on March 20 at Fimmvörðuháls, which is located between Eyjafjallajökull and Mýrdalsjökull. The ice […]

Easter parade in Karlstad

Dad has fun too at the childrens’ easter parade in Karlstad. Easter means a tour to Karlstad to participate in the annual easter parade. This was the 30’th time it was arranged, and several thousand people participated. For us, it was the fourth time there. The kids were dressed up as witches (påskkärringar) as usual, and […]

Beautiful day

I’m at home on parental leave today. Weather is great. Can’t resist sharing a view of our garden seen through the window of our home-office.
