Konferens i Montreal

Proceeding from print

The proceeding for “Stålforskningsdagarna” has finally arrived from print. It has two parts, where the first provides an overview of educational programmes and research facilities in materials science at Dalarna University. The second part consists of papers authored by the speakers at the conference next week. “Stålforskningsdagar 2011 — Materialteknik vid Högskolan Dalarna”, Joakim Storck (editor). […]

Book roundup — recent reading

Here are short opinions on some of the books that I have read since the beginning of  June. Smile or die: How positive thinking fooled America and the world by Barbara Ehrenreich (2009). After finishing this book last night, my previously suspicious attitude towards the plethora of self-help and positive thinking books out there has been reinforced. […]

Falun amateur bookbinders’ society website and 25’th anniversary exhibition

An observant reader might have noticed that I mentioned, on my about page, that I’m an amateur bookbinder. As a member of the Falun amateur bookbinders’ society (Falu amatörbokbindare), I try to get some time off to go down to the bindery every once in a while and make some progress on my various book binding […]

Successful firms do not require brilliant business models

Reading the initial chapters of David Teece’s “Dynamic capabilities and strategic management”, I can’t help getting the feeling that the author has got something slightly wrong. I know my credibility in case weighs lightly against the words of the distinguished professor Teece, but let me explain what I feel is wrong with his reasoning. First, […]

No bullets for Strategy’s strategist…

Yesterdays post about McKinsey Quarterly’s interview with Richard Rumelt [D. Lovallo and L. Mendonca, “Strategy’s strategist: An interview with Richard Rumelt”, The McKinsey Quarterly, nr.4, pp.56–67, 2007] left out one important point. The bullet point. In another post back in January, I mentioned that I’d read Edward Tufte’s “Visual display of quantitative information” and “Visual Explanations”. […]

Reflections on McKinsey Quarterly interview with Richard Rumelt

I read this interview with famous strategy professor Richard Rumelt [D. Lovallo and L. Mendonca, “Strategy’s strategist: An interview with Richard Rumelt”, The McKinsey Quarterly, nr.4, pp.56–67, 2007]. Rumelt thinks that some of the biggest changes in the strategy field over the last 20 years or so have been in the process of generating business […]

Capabilities, innovation and competitiveness

For the moment I’m concerned with industrial innovation processes. Why are they necessary? What types of innovation processes exist in an industrial production company? What’s the link between innovation and competitiveness? And how is innovation linked to related fields like organisational learning and dynamic capabilities? A couple of days ago I received a copy of […]

Lean product development and creativity

Yesterday I was made aware of this article on the website of the Royal Institute of technology, KTH, where Margareta Norell Bergendahl, professor in integrated product development  at KTH, discusses the danger of uncritically adopting lean principles in product development. It so happens that a couple of days ago I started reading Donald G. Reinertsen’s […]

Book review: Let my people go surfing

Yvon Chouinard’s book Let my people go surfing: the education of a reluctant businessman is both an autobiography, a company history and a book about business philosophy. It is an inspiring read for anyone with an entrepreneurial spirit that dreamed about or actually did start their own business. This book shows that there can be […]
